Carpooling FAQ
Q: Can I really save money carpooling?
A: If you live pretty close to where you work, probably not. But if you
live at least 10 miles from work, probably yes. For instance, if you live
10 miles from work, get 20 mpg, and gas costs $3/gal, you are spending
$60/month on gasoline just to get to and from work. If you rode with one
other person and cut your driving in half, you'd save $30/month; enough
for a nice lunch for two. If you live farther away, get less mileage,
or find two people to ride with (driving every third day instead of every
other day), you would save more. Use our $avings
Calculator to see how much you could save.
Q: I like the idea of carpooling, but I can't carpool 5 days
a week. How can I take advantage of the savings carpooling offers?
A: One of the misconceptions about carpooling is that, unless you can
share a ride five days a week, you can't be in a carpool. But it isn't
so! There are people out there who are willing and able to accommodate
a certain amount of flexibility in your schedule. As much as possible,
state your schedule requirements when you sign up (or edit your personal
information), and let people determine if your schedule fits theirs. The
key to making an arrangement work is communication with your ride-mates.
